Outdoor Chattanooga Center and Majestic 12 projects officially commissioned with LEED Gold certification

Thursday August 5, 2010

Outdoor Chattanooga and Carmike’s Majestic 12 theater, two of Chattanooga’s newest downtown amenities, were officially acknowledged for their focus on sustainability with LEED Gold certification plaques from US Green Building Council.  The plaques for both projects were received by Artech and will be formally presented to the owners/clients.

About the Projects

Outdoor Chattanooga, which was completed early 2009, is a renovated building located along the Tennessee River, adjacent to popular outdoor destinations Coolidge Park and the Walnut Street Bridge. It incorporates salvaged & re-used materials, a clerestory for daylighting and a green-roof system as a few of its environmentally friendly features. It also has a cistern to capture rainwater that will be used to flush toilets. Outdoor Chattanooga was recognized with a 2009 AIA Tennessee Award and has been mentioned in numerous green focused blogs.

Carmike’s Majestic 12, completed in Fall of 2009, is a 12-plex theater with two 400+ seat auditoriums and a VIP auditorium. Registered as the first stand-alone movie theater to receive LEED certification in the US, it features materials made from high-recycled content, LED and fluorescent ‘motion-sensored’ lighting and a white roof that reflects solar heat. It includes a cistern, as well. Due to its unique place in theater design history, the Majestic has been a topic in many traditional and online news outlets and had a feature in Film Journal magazine, an international entertainment industry trade publication.

Both projects were initially expected to receive LEED Silver, but gained additional points to attain the higher ‘Gold’ designation. In addition to these projects, Artech is currently seeking LEED certification for Fire Station #4 and VW Training Center.
